Matt McIlwain

Managing Director

Matt focuses on a broad range of software-driven companies and serves on the boards of several Madrona portfolio companies. He is particularly interested in applications and services that are infused with data intelligence capabilities. The next 10 years will be about ‘dataware’ at every layer of the technology stack.” His words of advice to would-be entrepreneurs: “Truly understand the customer and their needs first and work your way back to a technology-differentiated solution to their needs from there.”  

Past lives

Before joining Madrona in 2000, Matt was vice president of business process for the Genuine Parts Company (NYSE:GPC). He also was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, concentrating on strategy and marketing in technology-driven sectors and prior to that worked in investment banking at Credit Suisse.


Matt co-teaches a course on venture capital in the University of Washington Computer Science Department and is a board member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Washington Policy Center. Matt enjoys spending time with his family, debating public policy issues and trying out new technologies. He is also an avid snow skier and a rabid Sounders and Seahawks fan.

Awards and recognition

In 2011, Matt received the Washington Policy Center’s Champion of Freedom Award. He was also named to the Forbes Midas List in 2008, 2009 & 2011.  


Matt is a graduate of Dartmouth College and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.
