“I’m fascinated by collision of technology with economic processes. Novel software algorithms can enable completely different business models. ‘Disruptive technology’ is an overused phrase, but we see it every week – burgeoning revolutions – and are faced with the challenge of predicting which will succeed.”

Daniel S. Weld is a venture partner with Madrona and the WRF/TJ Cable Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. He co-founded Netbot Inc. (acquired by Excite), AdRelevance (acquired by Nielson Netratings) and Nimble Technology (acquired by Actuate). In addition, he serves as a member of Madrona's Technology Advisory Board. At the University of Washington, Dan leads a research team applying machine-learning techniques to problems of Web search, information extraction, and adaptive user interfaces.

“As a Professor at UW, I co-founded three companies. Madrona invested in every one, and I learned what a talented and knowledgeable team they had recruited. When I needed a break from Academia in 2001, I took a temporary leave of absence, and joined Madrona to see what it was like on the ‘other side’ of the funding fence. Now I spend time at both Madrona and UW – it’s a great combination and I think my experience at each place helps me perform better at the other.”

Extracurricular: Dan is co-founder of the Journal of AI Research, is on the Editorial Board of Artificial Intelligence, and is Area Editor for the Journal of the ACM. He received a Presidential Young Investigator's award in 1989, an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator's award in 1990, was elected an AAAI Fellow in 1999, and an ACM Fellow in 2006. In his free time, Dan enjoys mountaineering, technical canyoneering and Washington’s great outdoors.

Education: He earned bachelor's degrees in both Computer Science and Biochemistry at Yale University in 1982, and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Artificial Intelligence Lab in 1988.
