Managing Director Matt McIlwain is particularly passionate about partnering with teams who are the “soul of a company.” Together they identify the milestones needed to get to the next stage of company growth, and then he enjoys helping those teams achieve their milestones. His favorite part of the start-up process: celebrating the early customer wins and revenue. “Every great founding team has terrific passion, energy and confidence at that moment!”

At Madrona: Matt focuses on a broad range of software-driven companies. He currently serves on the boards of 2nd WatchAnimotoApptio, ExtraHop, GraphLab, IgneousMixpoPlacedQumuloSmartsheet, and Skytap. He was on the boards of iConclude (acquired by Opsware), Isilon Systems (NASDAQ: ISLN, acquired by EMC for $2.4 billion), Farecast (acquired by Microsoft), PayScale (acquired by Warburg Pincus),  Performant (acquired by Mercury Interactive), Tier3 (acquired by CenturyLink Savvis), and World Wide Packets (acquired by Ciena). “Overall, venture is currently in a healthy, positive cycle. Madrona continues to believe the market opportunities are exceptional for early-stage, information technology in the Pacific Northwest. We are committed to that strategic focus.”

Past lives: Before joining Madrona in 2000, Matt was vice president of business process for the Genuine Parts Company (NYSE:GPC), a Fortune 250 company. He also was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, concentrating on strategy and marketing and prior to that worked in investment banking at Credit Suisse.

Role reversal: If Matt were on the entrepreneur side of the table? “I’d start a new shopping service that helps consumers match their demand for information and intent to buy with a supply of relevant information and offers that consumers can review when they want.”

Extracurricular: Matt co-teaches a course on venture capital in the University of Washington Technology MBA Program and is a board member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA), and Washington Policy Center. Matt enjoys spending time with his family, coaching youth soccer, debating public policy issues and trying out new technologies.

Awards & Recognition:  In 2011, Matt received the Washington Policy Center's Champion of Freedom Award. He was also named to the Forbes Midas List in 2008, 2009 & 2011.

Education: Matt is a graduate of Dartmouth College, holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
